I’ve been getting some questions about my Instagram feed, so it was time to answer some of them here. Have an extended FAQ!
Also, there’s an announcement at the end for the Instagram 10K giveaway, because holy crud that’s happening soon.
First, an update:
The Seattle Dessert Map got expanded! Yay! This round covers various types of desserts. The December expansion will likely go back to neighborhoods, but I haven’t decided yet. If there’s anything you want to see, send me a line!
On to the FAQ!
How did you get into dessert writing?
I originally was a more general food & beverage writer back in 2011, when I fell into food writing right after starting grad school. (This is not a good idea, and I would highly suggest not taking on that kind of role while full time in multiple graduate programs.) I worked for a while on Crave Local as their Seattle lead, and then realized that I really needed to focus on graduating.
When I got close to graduating, I was all, “welp, I mainly talk about sweet stuff, so I can focus on that.” And then I finally joined Instagram after, um, four years of peer pressure.
What’s your favorite dessert?
Ask this question in person if you want to watch me stare blankly and blink a lot.
I have whatever I’m craving that moment, and my regulars. I don’t have one top dessert because I’m not always out for chocolate – or ice cream, or shave ice, or even hot cocoa. I actually like going to a ton of places and eating whatever I spy in the window.
Still, the places I visit regularly are:
- Old School Frozen Custard
- The London Plane
- Young Tea
- Intrigue Chocolate Co.
- Crumble & Flake
(That’s just off the top of my head. The real list is probably way longer than I want to think about.)
Do you finish every dessert?
Nope! Why? I’m often taste-testing multiple desserts. I don’t have a lot of stomach space at any one time, to be honest.
Instead, I have a lot of friends who eat for/with me. They’re generally pretty pleased with this.
What do you eat that’s not sweet?
A lot! I’m actually a grilled cheese and salad fan, and way too into ham.
I also have a vegetarian spouse, so when I’m eating outside the home I’m constantly looking for meat options so I’m not bringing that home.
There’s a corner of downtown Seattle that has three salad places fairly squished together: Sweetgrass, Mr West, and Juicy Cafe. I go to all three way more often than my budget would like, but I’m rarely up for building salads this complex at home.
Also, Mr West has ham. Which you can get on toast with cheese and honey, which may sound too sweet but is rather awesome. So yeah, that happens.
Why didn’t you reply to a comment/tag/like on Instagram?
Honestly, I’m barely keeping up. I’ve got a reminder system for comments now, but I especially miss tagged posts all the time.
I’d love it if you could answer my question on [this topic]!
Sure! I really need more than 24 hours if you’re on a time crunch, and I can always answer short questions. Longer/more in depth stuff, like custom tour requests, has project rates.
Also, Instagram is not the fastest way to reach me. Email and Twitter are better, but if you need something in an hour or so, I’m not the person you want to reach. Visit Seattle would be way better for that kind of last minute question about Seattle – and their team is pretty spiffy.
So, the Instagram 10K giveaway.
Oh my goodness, I should hit 10K followers before the new year! Whoa. Thank you!
And I said this one would be international, and it will! Hooray!
This giveaway will actually be in two parts:
- Seattle area (whether you’re local or planning to visit in the next six months)
- Not in Seattle.
The NiS one will be international – and also have no food. I wanted to make sure if things got stuck in customs nothing rotted.
The day after I hit that 10K mark, I’ll have two posts, one for each giveaway, go live. I’ll try to make them obvious as to which is which, because the Seattle one will involve dessert.
I know what both are about, and I’m not telling you. Nope nope nope. If you want the info out sooner, help me get to 10K?
And really, thanks again to all of you for being so awesome. The Instagram community has kicked so much butt it’s ridiculous, and I’m super excited to be giving things back to you. Keep being amazing!
